Clinical responsibilities for ICU/CCU/PICU Head Nurse:ICU/CCU/PICU Head Nurse is an effective practitioner able to establish and maintain a high-quality evidence-based nursing service. Pre Surgical• Ensure that operating on correct patient and correct procedure is being performed by completing time-out protocol• Preps operating room for patient/procedure• Perform instrument and swab counts.
Circulating Nurse, with the following additional duties:• Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient• Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens• Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis• Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly• Handles patient documentation• Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery• Preform time out procedure• Ensure an accurate instrument and swab count is recorded pre-post-surgical • Ensure contaminated sets are sent to CSSD in a timely fashion.
Scrub Nurse, with the following additional duties:• Ensure required surgical items are available 1 day prior to surgery.• Preform time-out procedure.• Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon• Maintain open communication between circulating nurse and operating team.• Ensure standards of asepsis are maintained.• Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit Phase:specific duties include unit functions addressing the nursing process aspects of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation as well as the nursing functions of teaching, risk management, time management and communication as indicated in the following manners:Assessmenta. Receives patient from the operating room with report of pertinent history and procedure (surgery performed, medications, fluids, complications, anesthetic/sedation/reversal agents, emotional status pre-procedure.) b. Advanced forms of invasive monitoring (i.e. CVP, Arterial lines, PICCO), Visual monitoring and analysis (i.e. Cardiac dysrhythmias, Glasgow Coma Scale, ECG, SaO2, ETCO2,12 lead ECG, sedation level, pain assessment)
Advanced forms of renal support (i.e. hemofiltration, dialysis) on a frequent basis with minimal supervision
